Drying is the critical first step in preserving dry-crop quality. Immediate drying of crops to the correct moisture content (MC) is an effective post-harvest practice that minimizes fungal growth and infestation.

Developed by GrainPro® in collaboration with the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) and the University of Hohenheim (UOH) Germany, the Solar Bubble Dryer™ (SBD™) is a modern sun-drying innovation that minimizes the effects of unpredictable weather on crops during the drying stage.

The SBD can dry grains and seeds at an average drying rate of 1% MC per two hours (based on rice and corn). Its transparent, UV- and water-resistant polyethylene (LDPE) cover traps solar radiation to heat the bubble. Moisture is then vaporized and pushed out by ventilators, which also maintain the shape of the bubble.

The drying floor is made of a proprietary watertight material to prevent water permeation from below. The top cover and the drying floor are joined together by heavy-duty zippers.

The SBD comes in two sizes. The SBD25™ has a drying area of 269 ft2, while the SBD50™ has a drying area of 538 ft2.

Both come in solar and plug-in electric models. The power is used for ventilation (one fan for the SBD25, two for the SBD50), which also keeps the bubble inflated.

Solar models come with a charge controller to re-charge the battery (not included).
